How can highlighters help with reading comprehension?
As with anything in life you need focus direction. When asking students or your child to highlight text, have them highlight for specific purpose such as the following:
1️⃣ Highlight for new unknown words
2️⃣ Highlight for new information you learned
3️⃣ Highlight for evidence when answering questions
4️⃣ Highlight for main idea and details
There are many more ways to use highlighters and that includes color coding information. For example, if you are reading a non-fiction text that talks about a famous painter’s talent and big heart, you can highlight details that emphasize talent in yellow and highlight details that emphasize heart in blue. This color-coding strategy helps sort information and makes it understandable.
The point is, when you are reading with intention of using a highlighter, know what the purpose is. Identify the intention and use the highlighter to fulfill that intention. This way you have direction, focus and will be improving and strengthening your skills.
